We are out of 4-letter .com domains

We are out of four-letter .com domains

Back in December 2013, we used our domain availability API to check all the combinations for four-letter .com domains. For example

AAAA.COM
AAAB.COM
AAAC.COM
AAAD.COM
up to….
ZZZX.COM
ZZZY.COM
ZZZZ.COM

All the four-letter com domains are registered

What we confirmed is that all four-letter domains are registered. We haven’t tried numbers, dashes, or IDNs, just 26 English alphabet letters. This takes us to 456,976 combinations or domains. Not to mention that three-letter and two-letter domains are long gone. So, if you want to switch gears and register other domain names, here’s a list of good domain registrars.

Four-letter domains are also known in the domaining industry under the jargon LLLL.COM or 4L. So, for example, 1PRO.COM wouldn’t be an LLLL.COM domain. Also, LLLL.COM doesn’t mean the literal domain llll.com but is a representation of a group of domains.

L = letter
C = Consonant
V = Vowel

1. CVCV
2. VCVC
3. CVVC
4. VCCV
5. CVVV, CCVV, CCCV, VCCC, VVCC, VVVC… (these are more often named LLLLs)

What are Chinese premium domains?

For a deeper explanation of consonant-vowel combinations or the Chinese premium domain, I would advise looking into this LLLL investment guide – click here.

What are the popular four-letter domains? Nike.com (CVCV), SONY.com (CVCC), HSBC.com (CCCC or LLLL), Ford.com (CVCC).

CVCV domains

Especially popular (worth more) CVCV domains are where the same consonant and vowel are repeated. Bobo, Gogo, Zaza, Vivi, etc. They are short, memorable, and easily pronounceable. However, it goes without mentioning that the most expensive 4-letter domains are four-letter generic words: cars, boat, card, dogs, cats, etc.

It goes so far as there is a general consensus among domainers, and letter frequency statistics also indicate that there are premium letters, average letters, and bad letters.

•Premium letters: a b c d e f g h i l m n o p r s t

•Average letters: j k u v w

•Bad letters: q x y z

If you want a short four-letter domain that is memorable and easy to pronounce, you are probably going to have to shell out some serious cash in the aftermarket. Do you own any 4-letter domains? Let us know in the comments.

Four-letter .com domain names that are for sale

If all four-letter .com domain names are registered, does that mean there are no four-letter .com domain names that are available for purchase? Absolutely not! Your best bet to get a four-letter .com domain name is from a domain investor. These companies and individuals have purchased these four-letter .com domain names from other domain investors, or they registered them when nobody else would. Most of these domains are very old. This means that they never reached their expiration date. Somebody registered them a long time ago and paid renewal prices every year, sometimes for 20 years.

Here’s a list of four-letter .com domain names that are for sale. Next to them is a creation date (when the domain name was first registered), according to whois.

LVCB.COM Created On: 02/24/1996

QWLI.COM Created On: 10/05/2013

LAEQ.COM Created On: 10/14/2006

Those are some weird domains, but if you are interested in purchasing any of these domain names, contact us.

Are there any unregistered 4-letter domains?

There are still unregistered 4-letter domains, but not on .com TLD (domain extension). As you can already see by the image below, there are unregistered 4-letter .net domains. With that being said, I think we can make an educated guess and assume that there are unregistered 4-letter domains on every other TLD except .com. Are any of these domain names worth something? That’s hard to say. Domain investors would probably price them on the low end. We have to be careful and not compare apples to oranges. We can’t compare the value of LVCB on a .com TLD, and a premium domain name (4 letters on a not-com) such as cars .online.

So, yes, there are unregistered 4-letter domains, but if no one is buying them, you have to ask yourself two questions. Are they worth anything? How will I be able to resell these domains?

We still have four-letter .net domain names

Just because we are out of four-letter .com domain names, it doesn’t mean there are no four-letter .net domain names. As a matter a fact in October 12, 2021 we used our Domain Availability API again! This time we checked all four-letter .net domain names. It turns out there are a lot of them that are available for registration. Click here to learn more about our research on four-letter .net domains.

With that being said, once you take into account hundreds of TLDs (domain name extensions), surely there may be as many as 50 million available four-letter domain names that are available for registration.

We still have five-letter .com domain names

In case you were wondering if there are any five-letter .com domain names available for registration, yes, there are! We haven’t checked all 11.881.376 5-letter .com domain names, but after several manual whois checks, we found that there are plenty of available five-letter .com domain names. Here’s an article on how you could get your hands on a list of available 5-letter domains. It’s not going to be easy to get that list, and furthermore, it’s not going to be easy to work with that list. There are a lot more five-letter .com domain names than there are four-letter .com domain names.

Also, I suspect that there are millions of five-letter .com domain names that are available for registration. This means it will be hard to find some that are worth anything. More on that in the article I just mentioned.

  3. Riaan François Venter says:

you can still get domain with numbers in like mine 0rfv.com

  4. Bogus Post says:

How did you come up with that ridiculous ranking when you list CVCC as one of the most lucrative value formats but it’s not even listed (implying it’s in the LLLL category) ? Park, Tart, Fart, Cart, etc…

  5. UI Palette says:

Google has consistently reported that dashes “-” do nothing to diminish page rank. Not sure why, but people still seem very reluctant to get on the dash bandwagon, it really opens up a lot of url possibilities. In any case, users should never be keying in your url directly, so the best strategy is just to hammer on your core keywords, use a dash if you need, and build traffic with direct links.

    1. UI Palette says:

(direct links, including those created on SERPs, etc.)

    2. Ben says:

“In any case, users should never be keying in your url directly” That is just plain stupid. TV ads? On-street ads? Other people telling about your business?

Mazt.com seems to have a lot of potential, I’d create a site there and flip it for sure

  11. Blahblahblahblah says:

People aren’t falling for this shit anymore. You can get any name now to bring your website online. Mysite.com. Alternative is VisitMyStoreInLondon.com or thisismyshopinlondon.com

The domain name game is well and truly over guys. You’re all sitting on dead ducks. It’s finished.

  12. Jolene Smith says:

Historically, when paradigm shifts begin, those who are negatively impacted by it say it will never work and often work hard to stop or slow the shift. Currently, registries of legacy TLDs (think .com and .net) are attempting to slow the paradigm shift of the new gTLDs. But these shifts are inevitable and early adaptors and communicators who know this will be taking advantage of the first mover advantage and acquire the most premium of the new spaces as they come available. The new gtlds not only fill a need for memorable domain names, they are inspiring entrepreneurs to establish new businesses.

  13. Rob TheGenie Toth says:

Would the value of 1PRO.com but that much less than LLLL.com ? It seems very brandable. (Assuming they could acquire OnePro.com as well , as a redirect). What are your thoughts on #LLL or even ##LL and similar domains?

    1. Goran Duskic says:

I guess a very good 4 letter domain with 1 number could be better than 4 letter domain with bad letters. It’s a different ball game if you have OnePro.com combined with 1pro.com. It’s hard for me to imagine a top brand buying ##LL just to be there. I’d love to see a good case study. I can’t imagine Twitter going from twttr.com to 1tweet.com… Just my opinion.

There is definitely raising interest in good 5 letter .com domain, and many good ones can be found at base price!

  20. Suzanne says:

what is the difference in valuations? I have two 4 letter domains, humh.com and aa50.com – earlier today I was offered $250 for the humh domain and I looked it up and some calculator valued it at $21K, really! Hell Yes! What do you think is the true value of a halfway decent 4 letter domain in reality.

    1. Goran Duskic says:

      Hi Suzanne

I’d like to stay away from the evaluation debate. No matter what amount I say, you can easily get as many people to oppose me.
I think we can all agree on something that’s currently established in the market, humh.com doesn’t have any numbers, and aa50.com does. Also, HUMH are better letters compared to QWXY. Is humh.com worth $21k, it is if someone is willing to pay for it.

You also have to take time into your equation. It might not sell this year, but would you be willing to hold it for 5 or 10 years if someone promised you to buy it for $21k then?

  21. Iyyappan Mani says:

Please email me if anyone interested in sawpper.com. The word derived from shopper. I made my domain public so u should know how to contact me.

  22. Daniel says:

How about 6ize.com ? how much is it worth? I am going to use it for a clothing store

    1. Goran Duskic says:

Well, first of all, 6size has a number in it, and numbers weren’t included in this research. Do you happen to know if there are any 4 letter domain names, that include numbers available for base registration?

  23. Leng says:

    I have xpso.com

    1. Goran Duskic says:

Have you considered selling it, or building something on it?

  24. Max says:

    I have oers.com
how much could i get from its sale ?

  25. Lachlan says:

I think LLLL.com domains hold significant value in many markets. I have one for sale on my website link. DVZT.com

  26. Bob says:

    I own xurq.com
Should i develop it or try to sell it?
In case you suggest to develop it can you please tell me how to increase its SEO value?
Also what domain parking service do you suggest?

Thanks for the great job and looking forward for your reply.

  27. Edwin says:

    I own mvoo.com

  28. Kris says:

Are 4letter domains really registered? Even a single one doesn’t exist? I’m bulk checking 100.000 combination and got nothing, want to look further but I’m lazy. Lol

I was check 4N and 5N all taken.

I think I will invest 5L and keep it for 3years.

    1. Goran Duskic says:

      Hey Kris!

I encourage you to spend time elsewhere, all 4letter .coms are taken. You can look for them in the aftermarket or try auction sites and dropcatch services. It’s hard to buy them below $200 nowadays.

5letter .com domains might be a better investment, but it’s speculative. I recommend DNAcademy, that’s where I learned a lot. You can use coupon code “WHOAPI” to get $50 off. Here’s my affiliate link. https://www.dnacademy.com?ref=duskic-914

    Hello Goran,
I have YUGA.COM . I think it is a great name!! I’m thinking about selling it. Any idea about it’s worth?
    Ciao, Madeleine

    1. Goran Duskic says:

      Hi Madeleine,

That’s a great question and a great domain name. If I can give you one piece of advice, it would be not too sell it for too low, because once you sell it, there’s no turning back. When I was starting out, I made that mistake a couple of times, and I still didn’t get over it.

My advice would be to hold that domain as long as you can, and when the right buyer comes along, you will know the price is right. In the meantime, you can promote the domain name (forums, Sedo, comment section ;)) and see if there is any interest. For example, I could offer you $300, because that’s how much it is worth to me, but you can also check Estibot.com to see a different price tag.

      Hope that helps!
